Biography: Dr. Elizabeth Moore is a psychiatrist and health services researcher focused on homelessness, healthcare access, and serious mental illness. Her research aims to improve care for people experiencing psychiatric illness, homelessness and other social determinants of health.

As a scholar, Dr. Moore partnered with the Greater Los Angeles VA on a project titled, “Understanding MyHealtheVet Use Among Homeless-Experienced Veterans.”  This project was awarded funding through the VA’s Research Enhancement Award Program. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, it aimed to understand how Veterans living in VA housing programs utilize mobile health technologies, and how these technologies can be improved for this population as they settle into new housing.   

Dr. Moore worked on and led several other projects as well during her fellowship. She led a qualitative interview project on sleep barriers among Veterans experiencing homelessness. She also worked on a project to develop a state-wide website housing COVID-19 mental health resources. For this project, she led community stakeholder meetings and developed two surveys to evaluate the website.  

Beyond research, she also developed community practice materials during the COVID-19 pandemic to assist physicians and other providers treating patients experiencing homelessness and substance use disorders during the lockdowns.  She also continued to see patients at the VA in the Patient Care- Mental Health Integration Clinic.  

Dr. Moore published six papers during her time as a fellow, including a first author publication titled “Understanding Homelessness as a Social Determinant of Health: A Framework for Psychiatry Residents” in Academic Psychiatry and a co-first author publication “Community-Partnered Development of a Digital Mental Health Resource Website to Support Diverse Communities During the COVID-19 Pandemic” in Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved. She also presented a poster at AcademyHealth titled “Sleepless in Los Angeles: Understanding Sleep Disturbances among Homeless Veterans.” 

Dr. Moore is currently a Psychiatrist at the Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare System. Her research continues to focus on homelessness and psychiatric illness. She is continuing her fellowship projects on portal use among homeless-experienced Veterans. She is also seeing patients and teaching trainees at the VA’s Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program.
